HotDish 3 Year Anniversary with Terry Mullan!!!
Oct 2nd
HotDish (1st Saturdays @ BLACK) is proud to present Terry Mullan and Scrubfish Oct 6th, 2012!!!
We have been doing our thing for 3 years and we have a special celebration in store for all of you fans and lovers of the underground house music sound! Come join us Oct 6th for one of house music’s most legendary DJs and producers… TERRY MULLAN!!
We will have special treats to give out for the show also so dont forget to get there early!
TERRY MULLAN - Chicago’s turntablist extraordinaire, turns out dance floors week after week throughout the US and abroad. Any true fan of House Music knows his name, and celebrates his amazing DJ sets. His credits include Coachella, Starscape, Bugged Out, The End, Footwork, and Ruby Skye amongst raves as far off as Japan, Australia and Germany. He has developed a faithful following to those who know through his signature style of funky quirky jacking techy acid house making up an entirely new genre all his own.
The eighties posed as the formative years of Terry’s career. Although his roots began in hip-hop, he found himself smack in the middle of the Chicago house explosion. House and Disco were styles of music that were entirely new to Terry, but the match was struck. Soon after gaining inspiration from Chicago air personalities like Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, Fast Eddie, Armando, & Mike “Hitman” Wilson via 102.7 WBMX, Terry made house his home. Next, when acid house hit the US, the link was completed; Terry found the sound he was looking for. Never one to follow the masses, he borrowed from each genre to create what we all know to be Terry’s sound, putting a bad ass twist on an otherwise conservative house scene.
This sound is put to the test on his releases on Robsoul, Definitive, Control, Funk’d, Chicago Housing Commission, Aciiieeed, and on his own imprint, Catalyst Recordings. Through his label he has released projects for the likes of DJ Sneak, Ian Pooley, Halo Varga, Mazi, Angel Alanis & TJR, as well as for himself under the monikers, Acid OG’s, Speakerphreaker, Tone Broke, and as Serotonin project on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva’s former imprint Definitive which featured Terry’s track “Sidewinder” on the Chemical Brothers “Brother’s Gonna’ Work It Out” Mix CD. Additionally, Terry gained notoriety for his records under the alias Speakerphreaker which includes the largely successful “Products Of Our Environment” EP, on Catalyst, which was featured on Pete Tong’s essential selection on BBC Radio 1 in the UK, & “La Nina/Nickel Bag Da Funk” EP on Smile Records, which was licensed to several top DJ mix compilations. Terry’s DJ’ing, label and tracks have earned him a reputation that extends worldwide. Never one to follow the masses, he borrowed from each genre to create what we all know to be Terry’s sound, putting a bad ass twist on an otherwise conservative house scene. This man is truly a living legend.
SCRUBFISH - House music producer/DJ from Chicago… appears on labels: Spatula City, Flapjack, Control Recordings, Guesthouse, Guess Who, Blockhead, Flatpack Traxx, Union Recordings, and Sole Priority.
HOTDISH - HotDish is both a collaborative of djs (Nate Laurence & J. Matthews) and a Minneapolis-based event crew. HotDish values the diversity of EDM in the Midwest, yet it is our aim to provide a space for – above all else – funky, new-school, and soulful house music in the Twin Cities. HotDish (hosts of the best funky-house parties in the Twin Cities since 2006) showcases talent that is pioneering and unifying – both local and international icons of this genre.
HotDish (1ST SATURDAYS @ BLACK) occurs EVERY FIRST SATURDAY of the month at the infamous First Avenue Record Room. The HotDish Mission: to provide a venue for the HotDish sound while fostering the local scene in a spirit of collaboration and unity. Guiding principles make us aware of malicious social structures so we encourage both diversity and philanthropy. We reach out to foster the underground EDM and hip-hop cultures of the Twin Cities to preserve who we are.

HotDish Party! Jonn Hawley and JC Hanna!
Apr 25th
As HotDish approaches its 3-year mark, the vibe is bursting at the belly. There is no doubt that HotDish has truly become one of the top-notch EDM alternatives in the Twin Cities, where house music is the Holy Grail and inclusion is valued – our shows are more diverse than Cee Lo Green’s wardrobe. So, to celebrate we’re enhancing the great taste with fewer calories and pouring down a bit of Milwaukee’s very best: the infamous duo of Jonn Hawley and JC Hanna!
Jonn Hawley
Jonn Hawley made his DJ debut in 1991 and helped define the Milwaukee underground dance movement. He has taken his passion and talent all over the globe to cities such as New York, Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Miami and even as far away as Hawaii and Ireland. Jonn began working on production in early 2000 achieving massive acclaim while earning an elite position among the current class of deep house innovators. In 2002, he began releasing tracks using the aliases Under Origin, Sound Navigators, and 5900 West; he also established Foundation 75, his production studio. In 2003 Hawley launched his label, Soul Fuel Recordings. Since then his work has appeared on numerous underground house labels, such as OM, Large, Bump Shop, Klassic Fiasco, and many others!
JC Hanna
Deep in the game for well over a decade, JC is not new to the scene by any stretch. After an introduction to rave culture and house music in the mid 90s, his life would never be the same. He’s been involved in the scene in all aspects from promoter, to dj, to sound engineer, label owner, and producer. He’s known for top notch efforts and quality across the board. Not interested in the fame fortune like many of these new “DJs” coming up, JC’s main focus has been and will always be THE MUSIC. Be it deep, tech, filtered, or otherwise… in some form or another, he’ll be playing house music till the day he dies. Working with Jonn Hawley at Soul Fuel Recordings and in the studio as Shadow People he’s garnered respect from the underground community both regionally and worldwide. With forthcoming releases on Lingo Recordings (Cincinnati), Smoke City Music (NYC/Huddersfield), and their own imprint Soul Fuel Recordings (Milwaukee) this local favorite shows no signs of slowing down soon.
HotDish
Per usual, HotDish hosts Nate Laurence and J Matthews will be slightly drunk, shoe-less, ready to rock, and bringing the energy you’ve all become accustom to! See you there!
***********************************************************
For all that come, we encourage you to step out of your shell for a moment. Dont worry, no weird ingredients for this party, but come prepared to have some fun and be an integral part of what HotDish is all about…makin new friends and having a great time!!!
So get on it and tell all your friends. We want this to be a sick party.
Its $5 cover and you should enter the Record Room Door located on the right hand side of First Avenue. That way you get in to our show, and have FREE crossover to TOO MUCH LOVE!!!

HotDish Black Light Party! March 3rd 2012
Feb 18th
Oye!
It’s HotDish time once again! And…with the massive (sold out) success of the last HotDish “Black Light Party,” it’s only fitting that we do it again. So nab your fluorescent garments, strap on your glowing gear, and whiff the tater tots…cause it’s gonna be an ill-disciplined cook-off! Discount if you are wearing glow gear!
DJ Aldric
Due to popular demand, we are proud to include DJ Aldric to the HotDish movement. The man has been a true staple in Minneapolis funky-ish for as long as we can remember. He’s held down multiple residencies throughout the Twin Cities and is responsible for uniting hip-hoppers, punk-rockers, EDM’ers, and your mama on the dance floor. His unique blend of anything and everything funky, with an amazing understanding of the music, has created a true following for Aldric. We’re so excited to have him!
Aaron Brooks
Also on the bill is Minneapolis’s own Aaron Brooks. For the past few years, Aaron has dropped his skills at numerous dark rooms in the city and has quickly put together a resume of fellow dance music enthusiasts who will vouch his ability to make you move. Aaron considers himself a purist, and baulks at the commercialism of the modern day club scene. With an underground background, and passion that would scare any garden-variety DJ; His deep & jackin, groove oriented style of dance music will erase all sense of time, and put your mind in a fog until the lights (sadly) come on.
HotDish
As we usually do, Nate Laurence and J Matthews…well…you know. See you there!

So get on it and tell all your friends. We want this to be a sick party.

HotDish Video Booth! Lee Jarvis Show 2/4/2012
Feb 16th
What a great time. We love having people come in and tearing up the joint. We love it too when we see so many people happy and having a great time. Come join us again next month to do the same. Check out the video booth video below!
HotDish Presents – Lee Jarvis and Bryan Gerrard
Jan 23rd
It’s HotDish time…strap on your fork-n-spoon hip holsters!
Special guest is our long-time friend, Lee Jarvis (London, UK). As most HotDisher’s know, Lee brings his own brand of heat and passion every time he’s in Minneapolis. He’s no doubt become a HotDish favorite, with multiple requests for his return around town, and we get to snatch him when we want due to a jello spanking deal and a beer boot….don’t ask. If your not familiar with Lee’s work with Moochin London, Fat Records, Freerange Records, and now his new imprint Vizual Records…you best ask som-body.
Opening the spot is hometown hero, Bryan Gerrard. Bryan needs NO introduction in Minneapolis. This is Bryan’s second showing at HotDish. We’ve been trying to nab him since the last time he played and we’re lucky to have him back. His “House Proud” night has shot through the roof and can easily be called one of the Twin Cities best house night (we’re biased about HotDish being the best but what the hell do we know?). BAM…..GERRARD IS BACK!
We must also note that this show will be the return of Nate Laurence to HotDish. The support that has gone out to him has been amazing and he’s taking his health challenges head on. He’s ready to return and rock the spot the best he can after a terrible bout with hearing loss and other challenges. Come show your support. And per usual, he’ll be shown up by J Matthews. It’s a HotDish “reunion” not to be missed!

HotDish has been at it for two years now and each show has coagulated into a local movement with unmistakable energy in an intimate setting. Their TWO-YEAR ANNIVERSARY BLOWOUT is sure to impress! They’ve dug in their couch cushions and pockets to bring a true icon of dance music, Lady D (Chicago, IL – D’Lectable Music) to showcase the occasion.
Lady D got her start in A&R with AfterHours Records where she was responsible for giving Kaskade his career and signing other huge well-known artists. She has appeared on such labels as BlackJack, Vista, Body Music, and her own imprint, D’Lectable. She has been requested by celebs such as Billy Corgan, Queen Latifah, Dennis Rodman, Black Eyed Peas, and the cast of Cirque Du Solei; she has also played alongside Francois K, King Britt, Ron Trent, Derrick Carter, Heather, Colette, and many more. Lady D has been featured in Billboard, Spin, URB, iDJ, DMA, DJ Mag, Chicago Mag, UR, 5 Mag and more. She’s rocked Europe, Asia, Mexico, Canada, and throughout the USA. A pillar of the Chicago house scene, she’s been a constant player at Smart Bar and is a resident at the city’s most famous and longest running party, Boom Boom Room. This year, Lady D was featured at The Wanderlust Festival and Lollapalooza’s 20th Anniversary on Perry’s stage. She will (without doubt) flatten the Record Room!
Starting off the night is Minneapolis’ (via Chicago) DJ Xel. No doubt a vet on the decks with a hell’a selection for booty shaking! Show early and show your love!
HotDish hosts include Nate Laurence (www.natelaurence.com) and J Matthews (dj-jmatthews.com). Though they have often been under the radar to many, they are both true soldiers in the underground dance culture and have been since the early 90′s. Nate is a rave-era veteran, an intoxicated DJ, and one of the most respected producers globally with releases on more than a dozen labels. He’s provided remixes for the likes of DJ Dan, Chuck Love, the Inland Knights, and Bryan Jones, all while holding a national/international gig rotation for the past six years. Nate is also the owner of a new record label (with philanthropic objectives), Pluralistic Records (www.pluralisticrecords.com). J Matthews (also a rave-era DJ) is the gel of the duo. He hosts his own radio show “Funk Yeah FM” on Chicagohousefm.com and is a staple that has showcased his talents at high-profile venues including First Avenue, Quest, and the long-running “Bump” at the Phoenix Landing in Boston, MA.
